Is There Really Such An Unusual Stigma Attached to Amway?

It was brought to my attention that the author of the pro-amway site had expressed the opinion that there is not a negative stigma associated with Amway. He must not be out showing the plan very often, because if he had, he would know that this opinion can easily be refuted by asking one simple question: Why don't distributors freely volunteer the information that it's Amway, up front, without being asked, during the contacting and inviting phase?

If you ask a distributor what they do when they are in the process of contacting you, they will rarely say "I'm an Amway distributor." When you are called to see if you're open-minded about looking at ways to increase your annual income, they will rarely say "I'm expanding my Amway business."

The fact is that distributors have more ways to wiggle out of saying the A word than President Clinton has ways of denying he had sex with Ms. Lewinsky. All you have to do is listen to a few prospecting tapes and you will hear dozens of ways to avoid admitting you're in the Amway business and they will even provide you with justifications as to why it's OK to deceive people and not answer their questions with the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Now if there was such a positive opinion about Amway with the American public, why don't they answer "I'm an Amway distributor" when they are asked what they do? Why don't they answer "I'm expanding my Amway business" when asked "What is it?" Why isn't the Amway logo (or at least the words Amway distributor) printed on their business cards? Why don't they wear Amway hats, shirts and jackets while out contacting people?

It doesn't take a rocket scientest to answer these questions. The reality is that distributors avoid admitting they are involved with Amway due to the negative pre-conceived attitudes that people have about the Amway business. This is nothing new. I was taught this all the way back in 1991 when I first became a distributor. This was years before there were any Amway-Info sites on the internet. So where did all these negative pre-conceived attitudes come from?

There can only be one source -- former distributors. Let's try and guesstimate the percentage of distributors who has tried Amway and left. In recent court documents Amway made the statement that there have been a total of several million distributors in the U.S. In the information section at Amway's website, they state that currently there is nearly 700,000 distributors in the U.S. If these numbers are accurate, then that means that 80 to 90% (assuming that "several" million is defined between 4-7 million) of all Amway distributors who fell for the "Greatest Business Opportunity of all time" concept -- hook, line, and sinker -- have walked away from the Amway business for some reason after some period of time.

When you understand this fact, then you can understand why many Amway distributors are so quick to label others and put down people who disagree with them. They have to be. It's a defense mechanism to protect themselves from the fact that the vast majority of all distributors leave. The rest of the world just has to be stupid....it can't be AMO-way, the source of all that is holy and true!!!!!!!

Ridiculing those that criticize the Amway business, or leave it, or say no to it is also one of the ways that AMO leaders use to establish an "Us vs Them" mentality. You see, AMO leaders have neatly categorized everybody who is not in the Amway business and distributors learn these categories from the tapes sold by the AMO's and when needed, simply repeat what they have heard. How do I know that? The arguements and even the comments that people generally need to tear down the people at the top are the exact same things that I used to say years ago. A reality about the Amway business that people seldom think about is that it generally suppresses innovation. The tactics, techniques and things that are being said now haven't really changed all that much over the years.

Distributors can try to associate Amway-Info sites with all the wild and wacky websistes on the internet, they can call us names, and they can try to affix all the labels they want on us, but it ain't gonna work. The internet provides an incredibly effective way of sharing information -- it's the ultimate arena for cross-lining. It has given thousands of people an outlet to share their Amway experience.

In the past the corporation and AMO's could always count on the fact that people would not share their Amway experience or only share it with a few people. Now, people are speaking out and sharing their experience in a forum that has reached hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. It's not just a few disgruntled losers -- it's thousands of people who have taken the time to share their experience. These stories are the barest tip of the iceberg. I sincerely hope that if you read only one section on my website or at any of the other Amway-Info websites, it's the reader's comments. It truly is the best part and is also the most damning for distributors.

Every year, the same percentage of people are finding out the exact same thing that all those millions of former distributors had discovered for themselves. The only difference between now and then is that most of these people are finding it out before they spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on over-priced products and useless motivational materials. People are now able to get enough information, before they sign on the dotted line, to make a quality business decision and not make an emotional decision.

This fact has the corporation and AMO leaders scared sh*tless.
