Los Angeles to Boston - 3,400 Miles by Bicycle |
Since I was a teenager, I've always wanted to ride coast to coast by bicycle. I was able to work out the unusually long vacation (7 weeks) with my employer and at the beginning of May, I was on my way from Frankfurt to Los Angeles with my trusty carbon-fiber two wheeled steed. I joined my sister in LA along with about 35 other total strangers, who were also crazy enough to want to ride their bikes cross country. Actually it was the "wimpy tour" since I did not do it self supported, that is carrying a tent, sleeping bag, cook gear, which all could weight at least an additional 40 lbs. The tour "for wimps" is put on once a year by Crossroads Cycling. Crossroads arranges the hotels, the baggage transport, mechanic support, sag wagon support and the majority of the meals. Unless you want to carry your own gear and spend more time on the road, doing it with a tour company is about the only way to do it. The tour was a lot of fun, and I met a lot of interesting people.
Anyway if you are interested in seeing the USA from a cyclist's point of view, here are my three video slideshows that are about 26 minutes combined, which you can view on youtube.com. Slide show part 1: LA to New Mexico Slide show part 2: New Mexico to Kansas Slide show part 3: Kansas to Indiana Slide show part 4: Indiana to Ohio Slide show part 5: Pennsylvania to Boston Slide show art 6: Participants candid shots If you want to experience more of such tour, there are numerous blogs from the participants.
