Trevor Chatham's Amway Story
Did Amway fabricate complaints to run him out of the business?

peter_kiernan.jpg (2203 bytes)I received a unexpected packet containing documents about former Australian Amway EDC and his trials and tribulations with Amway down under.   It is a story of a man at his wit's end dealing with a manipulative and controlling multi-billion dollar corporation.

Back in September 2006 this site reported a court order which ordered Chatham not to state that:

"The chances of a person making substantial income from an Amway business are very remote"

Chatham had been with Amway since 1985.  He first went diamond in 1987 and EDC in 1989 and became the second highest bonus income recipient in Amway Australia.

In Chatham's storypdf_icon.gif (914 bytes), he says his Amway disputes started in 1998 when he claims he was shorted $50,000 with the Emerald Enhancement Program Award.  Finally in 2005 an Arbitrator found in Chatham's favor and he was awarded the additional $50,000 plus interest.

In 2002 Chatham started using a teaching a relaxation technique called "Emotional Freedom Technique".   Amway took exception to using this practice in the Amway business and Chatham was told to discontinue it.

Supposedly Mr. Chatham was accused of continuing to practice the EFT method at public functions by anonymous distributors, whom the Amway lawyer would not name.    Later the supposed accusers were named to the Arbitrator and Mr. Chatham.     Those people all signed affidavits denying the Amway allegations of complaints. Mr. Chatham even lists their names phone numbers so they can be asked.   One of those people even stated that Amway had contacted them looking for information to use against Mr. Chatham.

If you read the court order from August 2006 you can now understand the additional parts about:

Until further order of the Court, and upon the applicants by their counsel giving the usual undertaking as to damages, order that each of the respondents be restrained, by themselves, their servants or agents, from:

(d) publishing in any manner, except to the respondents’ named legal advisers for the purpose of receiving legal advice, the correspondence at pages 181-273 of exhibit   “AWG1”pdf_icon.gif (914 bytes) to the affidavit of Anthony William Greig sworn 16 August 2006;

(e) publishing, whether via email, the world wide web, letter or otherwise, any statement that:

(i) The second applicant has committed perjury;

(ii) Peter Williams has accepted the second applicant’s perjury as acceptable behaviour;

(iii) Any or all of the first applicant or the second applicant or Peter Williams or Mike Mohr believe that it is acceptable behaviour for an Amway employee to lie on oath;

Additional court orders to the case can be found on the Australian Federal Court's website.

I'll let you read the rest of his story in it your find Mr. Chatham questions where the role of representative for Amway stops and when you can be a private person with your own opinion and actions without being controlled by Amway.  Mr. Chatham believes his right to free speech and to practice the EFT method in the privacy of homes is being infringed by Amway.   The story also shows first hand the strong arm tactics the Amway corporation uses against people, whose livelihoods are dependent about the Amway business.

For those who believe the business has residual income and can be willed, just read Mr. Chatham's story to understand what few rights you have under the Amway contract.
